Asia: Vietnam, est. 1945
Vietnam’s flag, adopted on the 5. September 1945 during the declaration of independence from French colonial rule, resulting in the First Indochina War (1945-1954). In an order to stabilize the country until the elections in 1956, a temporary divison of the country took place. North Vietnam (communist) and South Vietnam (anti-communist). Due to political tension the elections failed to take place, resulting in the Vietnam War (1955–1975). After the the fall of Saigon in 1975, Vietnam was unified under communist rule.
The flag features a red field with a yellow five-pointed star. Red symbolizes revolution and sacrifice, while the star represents the unity of workers, peasants, soldiers, intellectuals, and youth. It was retained after reunification in 1976 and remains a symbol of Vietnam’s communist ideology and revolutionary history.
