Europe: United Kingdom, est. 1801.
The UK’s history began with Celtic tribes, followed by Roman rule from 43 AD to the 5th century. After Roman withdrawal, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, and Normans shaped the region, with the Norman Conquest in 1066 centralizing England. Scotland remained independent until the crowns united in 1603 under James I (VI of Scotland).
The 1707 Act of Union joined England and Scotland, creating Great Britain. The UK grew into a global colonial power, establishing the British Empire, which became the largest in history by the 19th century, spanning Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania. Ireland joined in 1801, forming the United Kingdom, though most of Ireland left in 1922. After World War II, decolonization led to independence for most colonies, leaving the modern UK with 14 overseas territories.
The flag, known as the Union Jack, combines the crosses of St. George (England), St. Andrew (Scotland), and St. Patrick (Ireland). It symbolizes the unity of the nations within the UK and has been in its current form since 1801.
