Europe: Ukraine, est. 1991.
Ukraine's history dates back to ancient times, with the region inhabited by Scythians and later part of Kievan Rus, a powerful Slavic state in the 9th–13th centuries. After the Mongol invasion, Ukraine fell under Lithuanian, Polish, and later Russian control. In the 18th century, much of Ukraine was absorbed into the Russian Empire, with western regions under Austrian rule. Following World War I, Ukraine briefly declared independence but was incorporated into the Soviet Union by 1922. After enduring the devastating Holodomor famine and World War II, Ukraine remained part of the USSR until its collapse in 1991, when Ukraine declared independence.
The flag of Ukraine, adopted in 1992, includes blue symbolizes the sky, while the yellow represents Ukraine's golden wheat fields. The trident (Tryzub) is Ukraine’s national emblem, dating back to Kievan Rus roots. Historically used as a symbol by Prince Volodymyr the Great in the 10th century. Modern interpretations associate it with freedom, sovereignty, and strength.
