Asia: Syria, est. 1980
Gaining independence from french colonial rule in 1946, Syria underwent multiple design changes to their flag. The current flag design was adopted on March 29, 1980 which orginated from the short-lived United Arab Republic between Syria and Egypt (1958–1961), symbolized by the two green stars in the center of the flag. The white stripe symbolizes peace, the future of the Arab world, and the hope for a brighter future, while the black stripe stands for the dark period of colonialism and oppression faced by the Arab nations.
