Europe: Iceland, est. 1915
Iceland was part of Denmark for several centuries. In 1380, it entered a union with Denmark through the Union of Kalmar, which also included Norway. When Norway was ceded to Sweden in 1814, Iceland remained under Danish control. In 1918, Iceland became a sovereign state under the Danish crown, with significant autonomy, but it remained part of the Kingdom of Denmark. In 1944, during World War II and as Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany, Iceland declared full independence and became a republic.
Introduced in 1915 and officially adopted when Iceland became a republic in 1944, the flag has a blue field with a red Nordic cross outlined in white. Blue represents the sea, white symbolizes snow, and red stands for the island’s volcanic activity.
