Europe: Spain, est. 1785
During the Middle Ages, the Iberian Peninsula was divided into several kingdoms. In 1492, the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, completed the Reconquista against muslim invaders from africa, uniting Spain and establishing it as a major European power. Spain expanded its empire across the Americas in the 16th-17th centuries, becoming one of the world's largest empires. However, these colonies were lost in the 18th-19th centuries. Spain experienced a civil war from 1936 to 1939, leading to the rise of Francisco Franco's dictatorship (1939-1975). After Franco's death, Spain transitioned to a democratic constitutional monarchy in 1978.
Spain’s flag was adopted in 1785 under Charles III and updated in 1981. It features red and yellow horizontal stripes with the national coat of arms. Red and yellow reflect Spain’s traditional colors, while the coat of arms symbolizes its monarchy and unity.
