Asia: South Korea, est. 1948
Following WW2, the Korean Peninsula was divided into two occupation zones: the Soviet-controlled North and the U.S.-controlled South. Efforts to reunify the country failed due to ideological differences, resulting in the Korean War (1950-1953).
The flag of South Korea (Taegukgi), officially adaopted in 1949, is deeply rooted in traditional Korean philosophy, symbolizing balance and harmony through the Taeguk (Yin and Yang), representing opposing forces like heaven and earth. The four surrounding trigrams, derived from the I Ching (an ancient Chinese divination text that to provide guidance on life's changes, based on the concepts of yin and yang and constant transformation), represent the elements—heaven, fire, water, and earth and the four seasons.
