Europe: Slovenia, est. 1991
Slovenia declared independence from Yugoslavia on June 25, 1991, becoming the first republic to break away. After a brief 10-day war, Slovenia gained full international recognition and has since established itself as a stable, prosperous EU and NATO member, known for its Alpine landscapes and blend of Central European and Balkan cultures.
The Slovenian flag features horizontal white, blue, and red stripes—Pan-Slavic colors—along with the national coat of arms. The emblem includes Mount Triglav, Slovenia’s highest peak, symbolizing strength; below it are two wavy blue lines for the sea and rivers, and three golden stars from the medieval Counts of Celje, representing Slovenian independence and continuity.
