Europe: Serbia, re-est. 2006
Serbia re-emerged as an independent state on June 5, 2006, following the peaceful dissolution of the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. Historically, Serbia was a medieval kingdom and later part of several regional empires. It played a central role in the former Yugoslavia and has maintained a strong national identity through centuries of conflict, including the Balkan Wars and the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s.
The Serbian flag features a red, blue, and white horizontal tricolor, derived from the Pan-Slavic colors. Centered near the hoist is the national coat of arms, displaying a double-headed white eagle and a royal crown—symbols of Serbian statehood, Orthodox Christianity, and continuity with the medieval Serbian kingdom. The flag embodies national pride, resilience, and cultural heritage.
