Europe: Flag of the 2nd Republic of Austria, est. 1955.
Austria was part of the Holy Roman Empire and later became the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, which dissolved following World War I in 1918. However, the newly formed republic collapsed in 1934. From 1934-1938 it was governemed by a conservative christian government know as the Ständestaat. From 1938-1945 Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany. Austria regained its independence in 1955 after US, British, French and Soviet occupation.
The flag is said to have originated from the medieval banner of Duke Leopold V of Austria (1230 AD), who during a battle, was soaked in blood, leaving only the white band of the tunic visible. The eagle on Austria's current national emblem, adopted in 1945, symbolizes freedom and independence. It holds a sickle (for agriculture), a hammer (for industry), and its broken chains signify liberation from Nazi Germany.
