Qatar was part of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century and later came under British protection in the early 20th century. In 1971, Qatar gained independence from Britain and became a sovereign state.
Qatar’s flag was adopted in 1949 and standardized in 1971. The maroon represents the country’s history and sacrifices, while the nine points signify Qatar as the ninth member of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
