Asia: Islamic Republic of Iran, est. 1979
Iran's flag was officially adopted after the 1979 Iranian Revolution, which overthrew the monarchy of the Shah and established the Islamic Republic. At the heart of the flag is Iran's emblem, which is a stylized representation of the word "Allah" (God) in Persian calligraphy. Prior to this, Iran's flag had the same colors but featured a lion and sun emblem, symbolizing the monarchy. The emblem itself consists of four parts that resemble a tulip, often interpreted as a symbol of martyrdom, a key theme during the revolution.
