Asia: Flag of the Philippines, est. 1898
The Philippine flag originated from the Philippine Revolution against Spain in 1897 and was adopted after the Philippines declared independence on June 12, 1898, from Spanish rule, but it was not until July 4, 1946, that the Philippines gained full independence from the United States. This date became the official Independence Day until it was moved to June 12 in 1962 to commemorate the 1898 declaration.
The flag features three stars representing the three main island groups (Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao), a sun symbolizing independence, and an upright triangle for equality. The flag has a unique feature: when the country is at war, the flag can be displayed with the red stripe on top.
