Europe: Norway, est. 1821
Norway’s history dates back to the Viking Age in the 8th to 11th centuries. It was unified as a kingdom in the 9th century under Harald Fairhair. Norway entered a union with Denmark in 1380 and in 1814, following the Napoleonic Wars, Norway was ceded to Sweden but retained its constitution. In 1905, Norway peacefully gained full independence from Sweden and became a constitutional monarchy. Norway remained neutral during World War I, but was occupied by Nazi Germany during World War II.
Adopted in 1821 after Norway’s union with Sweden, the flag has a red field with a blue Nordic cross outlined in white. Red and blue signify Norway’s democratic values, and the Nordic cross reflects its cultural ties to other Scandinavian nations.
