Europe: Sweden, est. 1906
Beginning as a unified kingdom in the 10th century, sweden became a major European power in the 17th century during the Swedish Empire. However, its defeat in the Great Northern War reduced its power. Sweden remained neutral during World War I and World War II, avoiding direct involvement in the conflicts.
Based on a design dating to the 16th century, Sweden’s flag was officially adopted in 1906. It features a yellow Nordic cross on a blue field. Blue and yellow reflect Sweden’s historic coat of arms, and the Nordic cross signifies its Scandinavian heritage.
