Europe: Lithuania, est. 1918
Lithuania was a powerful Grand Duchy in the Middle Ages, which at its peak in the 15th century, was one of the largest countries in Europe. In 1569, it entered a union with Poland, creating the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Following the dissolution of the Commonwealth in the late 18th century, Lithuania was annexed by Russia during the partitions of Poland. Lithuania declared independence in 1918 after World War I, but it was occupied by the Soviet Union in 1940. Lithuania regained its independence from the Soviet Union on March 11, 1990.
First adopted in 1918 after independence from Russia and restored in 1989, Lithuania’s flag has horizontal stripes of yellow, green, and red. Yellow symbolizes prosperity, green represents freedom and the land, and red commemorates sacrifice and courage.
