Kazakhstan has a long history, with its territory home to ancient nomadic tribes and empires such as the Scythians and later the Turkic Khaganates. In the 13th century, it was part of the Mongol Empire under Genghis Khan. Over time, it was divided into various khanates (areas ruled by a Khan). In the 19th century, Kazakhstan became part of the Russian Empire, and later the Soviet Union. Kazakhstan’s flag was adopted on June 4, 1992, after its independence from the Soviet Union.
