The Austro-Hungarian Empire was a dual monarchy established in 1867 after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise, which united the Austrian Empire and the Kingdom of Hungary under a single monarch, Emperor Franz Joseph I. The empire's involvement in World War I (1914-1918) led to its collapse at the war's end, and it officially dissolved with the signing of the Treaty of Saint-Germain in 1919.
Black represented the Austrian Empire, specifically the ruling Habsburg dynasty, and was associated with the German-speaking population of the empire. Yellow/Gold symbolized the royal and imperial power of the Habsburgs, as well as the Austrian monarchy. Red represented the Kingdom of Hungary, reflecting the Hungarian component of the empire, which had its own distinct cultural and political identity.
