Europe: Republic of Italy, est. 1948.
Italy became a unified kingdom in 1861, after the unification of various states and territories on the Italian Peninsula. The Kingdom of Italy existed until 1946, when a referendum abolished the monarchy and Italy became a republic. During World War II, Italy was initially part of the Axis Powers from 1922-1943. After Mussolini's overthrow, Italy switched sides to the Allies. Following the war, Italy became a republic in 1946.
The flag, adopted in 1946, consists of green, white, and red vertical stripes. The green represents Italy’s landscapes and the country's hopes, the white symbolizes the Alps and peace, and the red stands for the bloodshed in the fight for independence.
