Ireland's history includes ancient Celtic culture and centuries of English rule. The struggle for independence intensified from the 19th century, marked by events like the Irish Rebellion of 1798, the Great Famine (1845-1852), and the Easter Rising of 1916. After the Irish War of Independence (1919-1921), the Anglo-Irish Treaty led to the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922, while Northern Ireland remained part of the UK. In 1949, Ireland officially became a republic, fully gaining independence.
Ireland’s flag first appeared in 1848 during the Young Irelander Rebellion. Its vertical stripes of green, white, and orange represent the Catholic majority, peace, and the Protestant minority, respectively, symbolizing unity and reconciliation.
