Europe: Denmark, est. 1219
Denmark's history dates back to the Viking Age and the unification of Danish tribes in the 10th century. It established a powerful kingdom, which included Norway and parts of Sweden during the Union of Kalmar (1397-1523). Denmark ruled Norway from 1380 until 1814, when Norway was ceded to Sweden after the Napoleonic Wars. Denmark remained neutral during World War I, but was occupied by Nazi Germany during World War II.
Denmark’s flag, the Dannebrog, is one of the oldest national flags, said to have fallen from the sky during a 1219 battle. Its red field with a white Nordic cross symbolizes Christianity and Denmark’s role in spreading the faith.
