Europe: Chechnya, est. 1991

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Chechnya declared independence from Russia in 1991. This led to two brutal wars (1994–1996 and 1999–2009) as Russia sought to regain control. Though heavily damaged, Chechnya was eventually reintegrated into the Russian Federation, now functioning as a semi-autonomous republic.

Chechnya’s current flag, officially adopted in 2004, features three horizontal stripes: green (symbolizing Islam and the natural landscape), white (peace and purity), and red (valor and the memory of those lost in conflict). A national ornament along the hoist honors Chechen culture and heritage.
