Germany existed as a collection of states for much of its early history, unified in 1871 under the German Empire. After its defeat in World War I, it became the Weimar Republic, which was succeeded by Nazi Germany from 1933-1945. After World War II, Germany was divided into East and West Germany. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Germany reunified in 1990.
The flag was first used by the German Confederation (1815–1866) and succeded by the flag of the North German Confederation (1866–1871). After World War I, it was used by the Weimar Republic. The colors represent the democratic and republican values of the nation: black for the people, red for unity, and gold for freedom
