This state flag of Germany was first used by the German Confederation (1815–1866) until it was replaced by the Flag of the North German Confederation (1866-1871) which later lead to the formation of the German Empire (1871-1918). After the fall of the German Empire the flag was reinstated and used by the Weimar Republic (1919–1933).
