Europe: Bulgaria, est. 1879
The First Bulgarian Empire was later conquered by the Ottoman Empire in the 14th century, and Bulgaria remained under Ottoman rule for nearly 500 years. The struggle for independence resulted in the April Uprising of 1876 and the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878), which led to the Treaty of San Stefano and Bulgaria's liberation in 1908. Despite territorial disputes, Bulgaria maintained its sovereignty and became a kingdom. After World War II, Bulgaria became a communist state under Soviet influence, transitioning to a democratic republic after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1989.
Adopted after liberation from Ottoman rule in 1879, Bulgaria’s flag features horizontal stripes of white, green, and red. White represents peace, green symbolizes agriculture and nature, and red commemorates the courage and sacrifices of the Bulgarian people.
