Europe: Belgium, est. 1831
Belgium's history involves several shifts in control. In the Middle Ages, it was part of the Burgundian Netherlands, later falling under Habsburg rule. Following the Napoleonic Wars, Belgium became part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1815. However, after tensions between the Dutch and the French-speaking Belgians, Belgium gained independence in 1830. The country remained neutral during World War I and World War II but was invaded both times.
Adopted after gaining independence from the Netherlands in 1830, Belgium’s flag has vertical black, yellow, and red stripes inspired by the coat of arms of the Duchy of Brabant. Black symbolizes strength, yellow represents wealth, and red signifies courage.
