Albania declared its independence from the Ottoman Empire on November 28, 1912, amid the collapse of Ottoman control in the Balkans. The country endured occupation during both World Wars and later became a communist state under Enver Hoxha. Since the early 1990s, Albania has transitioned to a parliamentary democracy and has sought integration with the West.

Albania’s flag features a black double-headed eagle on a red field, a design rooted in the banner of national hero Skanderbeg.
