After the indian independence movement, led by figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, India gained independence from british rule on the 15. August 1947. It was divided into India and Pakistan, resulting in a power struggle between the two nations over contested areas which last till this day.

The navy blue Ashoka Chakra (wheel of law) in the center represents courage, sacrifice and reflects justice and progress, white stands for truth and peace, and green symbolizes fertility and growth. The flag evolved from earlier versions used during the independence movement.
