Adopted in 1902, New Zealands flag it is similar to Australia’s but distinct with four red stars outlined in white, representing the Southern Cross constellation. In 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and various Māori chiefs living in New Zealand, establishing British sovereignty over New Zealand while recognizing Māori land rights. New Zealand became a British colony, later evolving into a dominion in 1907, and finally achieving full independence in 1931.
The Union Jack in the canton reflects New Zealand’s history as a British colony and its ties to the Commonwealth. While the flag has faced debates over modernization, it remains a symbol of the nation’s colonial history, indigenous Māori culture, and geographic location.
