Historic: Reichskriegsflagge (1871-1918)
The Reichskriegsflagge (Imperial War Flag) was adopted after Germany's unification under Kaiser Wilhelm I at Versailles, following France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War (1870–1871). By 1918, the German Army had mobilized over 13 million troops, with 6.5 million active soldiers, including Germans, Poles (from Prussian Poland), Danes (from Schleswig), Alsatians, and other ethnic groups from its states and annexed regions.
It featured an Iron Cross and the Imperial Eagle, symbolizing strength, unity, and the empire's military power. The flag was flown by the Imperial Navy and during military campaigns. It underwent several designs but remained a symbol of the empire’s military might until the end of World War I, when the German Empire dissolved.
