Asia: Flag of Singapore, est. 1959
Singapore’s flag was adopted on December 3, 1959, when the island gained self-governance within the British Empire. From 1963 to 1965 it was part of a federation when it merged with Malaya, Sabah, and Sarawak to form Malaysia. However, political and economic differences between Singapore and the central government in Kuala Lumpur lead to Singapore becoming independent again on the 9. August 1965. The crescent moon denotes a young and rising nation, while the five stars signify democracy, peace, progress, justice, and equality.
